Our Premier Album of the Year: The Artist's Masterpiece Claims the Premier Position.

On the surface, this work may look more like an arduous academic quiz rather than the latest popular music project by an artist who just had a last hit was a collaboration with an international K-pop icon. Split into four different sections and performed in thirteen languages, we have a head-spinning symphonic work investigating female mystery, religious transcendence, and bodily transformation, frequently through the perspective of different female saints. The dissolution of a love affair—a theme treated with grounded honesty on another major 2025 album—is shot heavenward on this record, buoyed by the constant sound of a major orchestra and input from a Pulitzer-winning songwriter among a vast list of contributors. Its sheer ambition by itself renders the work of contemporary pop stars look rather modest.

Rising Above Academic Pretense

The fact that Lux manages to escape overly academic posturing is nearly a miracle, and complete praise going to the artist. While this is not the first time album to fuse the past and the present, its scale are much higher on Lux, with the balancing act far more pronounced. The element that truly raises her fourth album, beyond its multilayered tunes, dense compositions, and engrained drama, is a core spirit of joy. Much like the iconic artist at her peak, there is a captivating sense to the vocalist's singing that pulls you up in its whirlwind. Even when she's tearing your heart apart, you still want to stay alongside her for the ride.

A Prime Moment of Joy

This playful spirit comes forth brightly during the stunning Italian ballad about a saint. It bathes in a sorrowful melancholy for more than four moments. Then, everything drops silent, to reveal we hear a gleeful laugh and a declaration before a hilariously over-the-top orchestral crescendo crashes down with comedic impact. The track immediately segues into the frenetic single featuring galloping strings, a powerful choral group, and a surprise role from none other than herself.

"The charm of Lux is that you rarely quite understand—nor wish to know—where it is going next."

Nearly every song concludes at a totally distinct point than how it began. One moment examines the fleeting trappings of celebrity with a delicate symphony only to collapsing into digital chaos. Another, a song that recalls her previous trap-infused work starts out dark and brooding, with prowling beats, before fluttering traditional rhythms and a heavenly chorus enter to soften its jagged corners.

The Balance Of Art & Pop

A key achievement of the album involves straddling the gap between bold innovation and broad appeal. This is little surprise that the album has achieved the artist's first release to break into the upper reaches of key markets: at its core a collection of utterly catchy pop songs. A song performed entirely in English builds on a refrain that seems to gather more and more nagging hooks while it spins skyward. This trick is echoed on a different expansive track that grows and contracts, weaving multiple tunes as an intricate weave.

  • A dance-infused song charms via its playful, theatrical drama and an anthemic chorus.
  • Lyrically, it aligns the pop culture impact of other breakup anthems, eviscerating a former lover described as an "emotional terrorist".
  • Throughout these tracks, the vocals carry a sharp smile, akin to a fairy-tale character hiding a knife: "Gold medal in acting like a scoundrel / You have won the trophy of letdown."

A Maximalist Feast for the Ears

This album is popular music on a grand scale, a hungry grasp for high Art in an era of looming artificial sameness. It rejects self-absorption for sublime transcendence, creating an over-the-top drama that skillfully controls its own built-in excess. It is a deep well of hidden gems that requires time to completely mine but doesn't feels like a chore. While some big pop albums of 2025 felt like a meager scraps, this record offers a lavish feast where the characters around it, some tipsy on holy wine, flit between conversations about ancient saints, the profound feeling of heartbreaking grief, and shared gossip about hopeless partners. In essence, it's a modern-day theatrical production from music's truly endlessly creative visionary.
